PowerWatch can be installed on virtually any digital electricity meter. Its open architecture allows for the integration to Building Management Systems, SCADA systems, Accounting software and virtually any other software system that supports open interfaces.
PowerWatch Delivers:
High visibility of your energy consumption to all stakeholders
Real-time performance measurement of all your energy projects relative to your own energy consumption history. PowerWatch quantifies the effect, and therefore the savings, achieved.
PowerWatch generates pro-forma bills for any time period.
PowerWatch estimates your environmental footprint, based on emissions that result from your use of electricity – this enables you to reduce your footprint over time.
An easy installation and integration to most digital meters
An excellent cost: value ratio.
Basic energy management training, delivered as part of the PowerWatch installation project.
PowerWatch addresses the following key elements required to Deliver Energy Excellence:
PowerWatch transforms energy data from the meter into information. Information is suitable for decision making – data is not!
PowerWatch transforms information into knowledge. Knowledge allows you to understand your energy consumption better – enabling you to improve your efficiency.
PowerWatch makes energy information available in real-time – we read data from your meter every minute. This ensures that your decisions can be made to make a difference.
PowerWatch makes energy information available to everyone in the organisation. The easy to use web-interface makes it possible to deploy PowerWatch throughout your organisation. There is no cost implication if you give more people access to PowerWatch information.
Light only when you need it. About 19% of the energy used world-wide is used for lighting. But much of it is wasted – because the light that is "ON" is not needed.
Lights come "ON" when you enter a room and "OFF" again when you leave. Whether corridors, WC's, basements, stairwells, or garages – no light can be forgotten or left "ON" when not needed. Wasted energy is ruled out and Carbon emissions and costs can be saved. Replace conventional switches with sensor-controlled switches, or use sensors to control lighting – indoors and outdoors.
Sensor technology and innovation employed by Energy Systems SA has the perfect answer to every situation.
Types of technologies
Passive Infrared (PRI) Occupancy Sensors
Infrared sensors detect the difference in heat emitted by humans in motion from heat emitted by the background space. PRI Sensors require a direct line of sight to sense motion. Sensitivity to smaller movements decrease at distances greater than 3 meters. As a result these sensors are best suited for smaller, enclosed spaces.
Ultrasonic Occupancy Sensors
Ultrasonic sensors emit a high-frequency signal that is undetectable by humans and animals. The signal bounces off objects, surfaces and people in a space. It then returns to the sensor, which interprets change in frequency as motion. These sensors do not require a line of sight and can sense movement around corners and objects. Ultrasonic sensors are highly sensitive to small movements up to 8 meters
Dual-Technology Sensors
Dual-technology sensors employ PIR and ultrasonic technology, or PIR and microphonics technology. These sensors give maximum coverage and reliability. They activate lights only when both technologies detect movement, and because either of the technologies is enough to hold the lights on, these sensors reduce the possibility of false on and off triggers.
High-Bay Sensors
One of the most cost effective applications for occupancy sensors is in warehouse aisles because these areas are not occupied on a constant basis. For warehouses with high-intensity discharge (HID) light sources, lighting can be switched to a lower level.
Daylighting Control Sensors
On/Off Photocell and Dimming Photocell sensors provide intelligent control of lighting for Daylight Harvesting applications. Ideal for spaces with windows, the sensors work by monitoring daylight conditions in a room, then controlling the lighting so as to ensure that adequate lighting levels are maintained.
Lighting accounts for 30-40% of electricity use in commercial buildings. High efficiency lighting retrofits can cost-effectively save from 30-50% of this energy while enhancing the visual environment and improving lighting quality.
Magnetic ballasts, from a consumption point, 10 lamps for example, at 58W each give you 580W, total wattage for the lamps. In addition to the wattage used by the lamps, however, there is additional, totally wasted wattage used by the magnetic ballasts.
For a standard 2x58W car park type fixture the magnetic ballast will use approximately 30% more watts than the lamps. That is, a 2x58W magnetic ballast fixture will consume approximately 2x58x1.3 = 150 watts rather than the 116W one would assume.
The additional 34 watts is totally wasted as heat and provides no benefit to anyone whatsoever. There is thus a big push to do magnetic to electronic ballast retrofits. Eskom and the customer reduce the peak kw of demand used by the lights by approximately 30% just by changing from magnetic to electronic ballasts.
Example
Below is an example from an Energy Systems client with 1856 lamps in his parkade
The consumption is actually approximately 1856 x 58 x 1.3 = 139,942 watts
From the savings side, there are several components to the total savings figure. These include:
savings in consumption (kwh) from changing the magnetic ballasts to electronic ballasts
savings in demand (kw) from changing the magnetic ballasts to electronic ballasts
savings in consumption (kwh) from installing the sensors
tax savings on the depreciation of the capital cost of the system over the first of 3 years
The breakdown of their daily savings is as follows:
R 24.54
Demand savings from changing magnetic to electronic ballast (reduces your peak demand therefore reducing demand cost)
R170.72
Consumption savings from changing magnetic to electronic ballasts (the watts consumed by the fixture is now lower)
R304.17
Consumption savings with Energy Systems sensors installed (turns the lights off when not needed)
R499.43
Total savings per day (on 1856 lamps) to customer
Note that the savings above include the tax savings on depreciation. The basis for the calculation is that the system can be depreciated over three years in equal amounts with the depreciation taken as a normal business expense which results in a tax savings to the company.
